Back in 1984 I heard a quote stated by a man who was in his 90s: “If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of my body.” For some reason that hit me like a brick and has stuck with me ever since. Even though I had always been athletic and ate healthy growing up, I now had a 3-year old son, pregnant with my daughter and knew I wanted to be around a long time to watch them and their children grow up. And I wanted to stay healthy so I could be an active part of their lives. I also knew I did not want to end the last of my years in a “facility” outside of my home. If you have not yet experienced that, I highly recommend you enlighten yourself by visiting a few in your area… that alone should hit anyone like a brick !!!
I have been practicing what I preach for over 30 years and frequently hear friends say to me with a smirk, “Hey, we’re all going to die some time so I am going to enjoy whatever I want while I’m here” which means, eating whatever they want no matter how unhealthy it is, without thinking about where that food or non-food comes from. Most of them take better care of their cars than they do their bodies! They burn the candle at both ends, not realizing that a balance of healthy organic food, physical (and mental) exercise and a good night of sleep is vital to consistently good health. Stress is one of the top 6 leading causes of disease and death, but can be drastically reduced by practicing this balance… and a little Yoga and Meditation in there is icing on the cake as studies show these practices can actually reverse DNA damage. I’m not saying it’s easy, but I AM saying that it’s worth it. These same friends now have diabetes, have had a stroke, had a breast removed from cancer, have dementia, take blood pressure medication and/or suffer pain from fibromyalgia.
I currently work at a very large teaching hospital. I see VERY sick (and most are also overweight) people come and go… a lot of them… every day… hoping for that miracle drug, that miracle surgery, that miracle cure… when all many of them had to do was to originally take care of their bodies along the way. Do people not look at their bodies in the mirror? Do people not step on a weigh scale to see if they have gained or lost a pound? Ignoring it won’t make it go away, it only gets worse! I have listened to many stories, but one story recently gave me chills from a woman around my age who had stage 4 cancer. She was frustrated because she desperately wanted to live, but wanted to be treated alternatively. She had gone through the gruesome chemotherapy/radiation route once before and refused to do it a second time, but when the different practitioners found out she was in stage 4, they immediately recommended the conventional treatment instead of their alternative one. They didn’t want to tell her that it was too late. It was a merry-go-round journey for her and a very expensive one too. She totally regretted not taking better care of her body along the way. I certainly do not want to be in her shoes EVER so I am going to do whatever I can to prevent that. Most of the healthy cells in our bodies rejuvenate every 21 to 28 days. It is never too late to start taking better care of our bodies…. trust me, it’s worth it !!!
I am not denying that genetics plays a role in our health situations at times, but studies allegedly prove that it may only be a 20% factor. It has also been proven that by consuming an organic diet (food grown naturally without the chemicals in fungicides, pesticides and artificial fertilizers), exercising at least 3 days a week, reducing stress and getting an average of 8 hours of sleep during the hours of 10 pm and 6 am, our miraculous human bodies can override those genetics. So no more excuses… It’s really not that hard to do !!!
Yes, my body is going to die some day, but I sure don’t want it to be MY fault or before my time!!!
There are SO many books out there written about health and I have read more than my share of them. Keep it simple and keep it real, that’s my motto. One book that recently made a huge impact on me, one that puts it in sections and then pulls it all together is “How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease“ by Michael Greger, MD. He has different chapters on “How Not to Die from Heart Disease”, “How Not to Die from High Blood Pressure”, How Not to Die from _ _ _ _ _ _ _”, etc. With well researched information, he offers GREAT advice on what foods to eat or NOT to eat, depending on your situation or whatever you are trying to prevent or reverse.
